I Samuel 15-16
There are several well-known phrases from these two chapters. Ch 16 is the account of David being anointed king by Samuel. In the process, Samuel sees Eliab who was obviously an impressive physical specimen because Samuel thinks “surely this is the guy”. The Lord responds with “people look at the outward appearance, but the Lord looks at the heart”. Even the great Samuel had to be reminded of this truth. But the one that is so powerful to me is earlier when Saul defeats the Amalekites but keeps the best of their flocks to sacrifice to the Lord. Doesn’t sound like a terrible thing on the surface but it was in direct disobedience to God’s command to completely destroy everything. I’m sure Saul reasoned that once they were sacrificed then they would be destroyed so technically they would be in compliance with God’s command. But quite simply that’s not what God said. When Samuel confronts him he tells him this simple but profound statement: obedience is better than sacrifice. It’s really simple….. do what He tells you to do. Don’t tweak it. Don’t reason how you are “technically” doing what He says when you’re not actually doing exactly what He said. Perfect obedience is what He wants. It’s what He expects. It’s what needs to happen for the best outcome. Just do it!
