I Samuel 3
Eli had his problems, especially when it came to raising his kids. God was very displeased with the ways his sons were behaving and Eli was doing nothing to correct them. He was certainly no model father but yet God had Hannah put young Samuel under his care to serve in the house of the Lord. I’m sure that kept Hannah on her knees as she heard of the exploits of Eli’s sons, knowing that these were the influences that would be on her son Samuel. As for Eli, it seems that he had given up as a father. He failed in training his sons. He’s failing in controlling them now. And he’s just accepted the judgement that God has placed on his family. But even this guy finds a way to be a beneficial instructor to Samuel. He teaches Samuel how to hear the voice of God and how to respond. Instead of just blowing Samuel off, he was sensitive to what God was doing in Samuel’s life and took the opportunity to mentor him in communicating with God. No matter how big of a failure we think we may be in certain areas don’t think God can’t use you to be a positive influence on someone else, even in our weak areas. Be sensitive to what God is doing in people around you and don’t miss an opportunity for Him to use you. In our weakness HE is strong.
