I Samuel 31
David again has an opportunity to kill Saul in Ch26 but refrains again. Then, understanding that Saul will continue to pursue him, he goes to live in enemy territory where Saul will not look for him. Saul’s downward spiral continues. With no reverence for the Lord, consumed with jealousy, tormented by evil spirits, and faced with an enemy about to attack, Saul abandons all the ways of the Lord and turns to sorcery. Evil has overtaken him and he now turns to the very wicked things that he himself had banned and driven from the land earlier in his life. What started as such a promising reign has now fallen to unthinkable depths. A strong kingdom with a humble leader eager to please God is now on the brink of a monumental defeat with their king having been slowly overtaken by evil he allowed into his heart. God allows rebellion for a time but He will bring judgement. David stayed true and left the situation in God’s hands. His days as a refugee on the run will soon be over and all that God promised him will become a reality.
